This week SB 71 (Wiener; D-San Francisco), a bill that seeks to require solar on new buildings was introduced.  Although details need to be written, the author states his intention with SB 71 is to require the installation of either solar heating or solar photovoltaic systems on any new construction subject to the “solar ready” requirements of CA Title 24 Energy Standards for buildings.  Modeled after a recent ordinance passed in San Francisco which requires 15% of roofs on all new buildings 10 stories or less meet these provisions.

CBPA is working directly with Senator Wiener’s office to provide information about how such a solar requirement would impact the wide variety of building types seen throughout the state.  We are very supportive of both energy efficiency and energy generation and want to find ways for the state to encourage and incentivize both.

We are reaching out to members to get feedback and information about costs and impacts on construction and management.  If you have recent examples of incorporating solar into a project and can share details, please let us know.
